Typical Day
Wondering what a day in our Skills for Working Life Programme looks like?
Below are some diary entries from our alumni.
Day 1 – Journal
Today my Job Coach picked me up from home and we travelled by bus and train. I found reading the timetable confusing at first, but my Job Coach helped me check the times. I was able to pay for my own ticket and find us a good seat.
We visited a workplace for a tour. I felt awkward when we arrived because there were new people there. My Job Coach helped me think of questions to ask and reminded me to speak clearly. After a short time, it felt easier to talk and walk around the building.
Later, we went to a café to sit and do some work. It was busy and noisy - which I've learnt to cope with more recently. So me and my Job Coach found a quieter table and they reminded me I can take b'dreaks whenever needed. I worked on my CV and looked at jobs online.
At the end of the day, we travelled home and talked about how the day went. I felt tired but proud of myself!
Day 2 – Journal
Today I met my teacher for my weekly teaching session. Me and my Job Coach travelled by bus and train to get there. I felt a bit more confident with the journey today, but I still needed a reminder of which stop to get off at.
We went to a community space for a teaching session. We worked on professional communication skills, which are different to they way I usually like to talk. I learnt about how to say what I mean but in a way that sounds professional and confident. The teacher helped by giving me examples and letting me practise slowly. Speaking out loud was uncomfortable for me at first, but it got easier with support.
After that, I went out with my Job Coach to practise these skills in shops. I had to talk to staff and ask them questions. I was really enjoyed this bit and my Job Coach said I did really well. My Job Coach stood nearby and helped me if I got stuck but I didn't need much help and each shop felt a little easier than the last.
On the way home, we talked about what went well today and the plans for next week.
